Hill College hosts Girls STEM Day

On Friday, March 1, 2024, Hill College hosted its first annual Girls STEM Day as part of the state’s initiative to recognize and encourage girls in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In 2019, the Texas Legislature passed a bill designating March 1 as Girls STEM Day to encourage girls and women in these educational and career paths—2024 marks the fifth year of this statewide annual event.

The Hill County Campus hosted 211 students and 33 adults from eight different partner school districts and one private school. Participants explored subjects from biology to astronomy, mathematics, kinesiology, physics, welding, and engineering. Students learned about Möbius strips, mathematical objects that are considered non-orientable surfaces, meaning that one cannot distinguish where the circular surface begins or ends. They learned about deciphering codes, organisms that live in ponds, human anatomy, magnetic fields, the importance of water conservation, electrical circuits, and other topics.

Featured guests included Lyric Lain, an engineer with Huitt-Zollars, a national engineering and design firm; Ariel Caudill, a chemistry major from Texas Tech University; and Melissa Lewis, a physics instructor at Tarleton State University.

“From peering through microscopes to exploring the science of the upcoming eclipse, students experienced a hands-on learning adventure. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to the volunteers who made the event not just educational but incredibly fun!”, said Dean of STEM at Hill College Dr. Alisa Carter.

The STEM Pathway prepares students for careers in science, information technology, kinesiology, engineering, and mathematics. Hill College STEM students receive the foundation necessary to continue to a four-year institution to further their education. This pathway leads to a wide range of professions, opening doors for opportunities in research, development, and innovation.
